Title: Something Strange going on with adventtalk.com
Post by: WillowRun on January 18, 2009, 07:43:31 PM
I logged on this weekend to visit my favorite SDA message board.  Typed adventtalk.com and instead of my favorite message boards, I found myself staring at the 3ABNtalk message boards.  I've checked norton and the firewalls to make sure nothing was amiss..but I must state categorically that I want nothing and no part of 3ABNtalk and what ever trick they used to point my browser to their site wwas not appreciated at all.  Has this happened to anyone else.  Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Willow,

As you may know, Ian's groupies have purchased several domain names almost identical to ours in an effort to trick people into going to their site.  If you ever clicked on the last link they provided which the same as ours minus one "t", you know what I mean.  Is it possible your browser might be automatically filling in that address rather than ours which has two "t"s?

Snoopy,

I tried dropping a t in adventtalk and I went to their boards.  I was so horrified at what I was seeing, I didn't check my spelling.  Totally not cool buying up similar domains to siphon off the unsuspecting.

oh well mystery solved.

Thanks for the help.  I was sure I'd been trojaned.

Willow,

As you said, they tricked you into going to their site. Ian and Steffan had to use deceit and trickery to get you there. That says something about them.

You're right - totally not cool!  But typical.

So sad that 3abntalk has to resort to this sort of thing to get readers.  :(  I have adventtalk in my favorites so I don't have to type it in all the time.  This AM I did type in adventalk*com and adventalk*org and of course I went to 3abntalk.  When I do go to their site to see what poison they have over there, it is just me the guest visiting.

I wonder if such tricks could make them vulnerable to a trademark lawsuit.

Poison is the right word.

I do not think this type of 'poison' is worth pursuing - noting yes, for reference and to keep
away, but not worth the extra notice further publicising such petty actions would engender.

Now, I didn't have that to happen to me, however, I was wondering why the site was so quiet........

Because you and I are quiet. There has just been the fourth death among friends and family within a few days. That does make one wonder

I see that another trick is to place a hyphen between "advent" and "talk".  With either ".com" or ".org" at the end, one is taken to their site as well.

Steffan and Ian you have some gall accusing others of lying.

Johann, are you speaking of deaths in the Shelton family or other 3ABN workers?

I think he meant his own family.

Sorry to hear that, Johann.  The loved ones are in my prayers.

Johann,

I am so sorry for your losses.  It is hard to watch our family and friends die.  It tends to make us realize all of our days are numbered!

As a pastor, I understand you held one of the services.  That would be doubly hard for me with family.  I tend to cry because I cannot find the right words to express what my heart feels.

I am so sorry.  Grace to you and yours!   :praying:

Love Fran

Ok so, today I was trying to access AT and typed one "t" by accident and ended up at 3ABNtalk.  I tried it again purposely and got the same thing.  What is the point to that?

I believe it is a new and improved membership drive!  Get new members and make them think they are at Adventtalk!   It is crazy, I know!  However, some people will try anything to get someone over there to read.  A desperate move at best.  It is mighty lonely as I see it.

Why don't you ask them this question over there?

Fran,

I am very happy to hear the good news about your daughter.  As I am having PM problems here, I will PM you further regarding that over at Maritime.

Not necessarily, Di.  I believe there are quite a few readers here who prefer not to go to that site!!  Did you ever get an answer to your question?

So far I have counted 8 domain names that use some combination of "advent" and "talk" and either ".com" or ".org" or ".net", but which redirect the reader to Ian and Steffan's smut site.  And there are probably others.  How sad, to have to trick someone into visiting your website...
