Hope Channel Vegetarian Cooking Program wins Telly award
Hope Channel’s popular Cooking Vegetarian program won a bronze award during the 29th annual Telly Awards this month. The award marks the first Telly for the church’s four year-old television network.
The Telly Awards are judged by top advertising and production professionals and past winners. Each year, some 14,000 advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable companies and corporations from around the world enter their work for consideration. Award categories only include bronze and silver designations.
“This is great news for the church and its television network to gain this kind of recognition. This award adds huge credibility to the church’s work in the world. This program is popular with our regular viewers, and helps to build bridges to those who may not be spiritually inclined so that they can learn practical lessons on a healthy lifestyle, enticing them to watch our other programs that will lead them into a relationship with Jesus,” said Hope Channel president, Brad Thorp.
The episode of Cooking Vegetarian, featuring Adventist chef Sualua Tupolo, won in the "Education" category for its production value and quality of programming, said Hope Channel’s Joe Sloan, the program’s producer. Sloan called the award a "significant acknowledgement" from the commercial community.
“The intent of the program was to promote our church’s health message, to demonstrate that vegetarian cooking is simple, tasty, and fun; and to make the spiritual connection between healthy living and a person’s Christian walk,” added Sloan. “We get about as much viewer response to Cooking Vegetarian as we do for any of our programs.”
Tupolo, former executive chef for Adventist-owned Atlantic Union College, recently returned to his native American Samoa, having spent 25 years cooking for government officials and other dignitaries across the United States and the South Pacific, including members of the U.S. Congress and the king of Tonga. Future episodes of Cooking Vegetarian will feature other food experts.
